The Best Electric Scooters (& Rides) for Camping (Updated Nov 2023)
With summer rushing towards us, it’s almost time to start packing the tents & inflatable mattresses before venturing off into the wilderness. While some might get all they need from sitting in a nearby field eating marshmallows, the more adventurous among us may travel further afoot. If you plan on taking your adventure somewhere cars might struggle to access, you may be considering taking along an electric scooter or ride with you.
To help out, we’ve compiled a list of the best electric scooters (and rides) that can add a little more adventure into your camping (or caravan) trip, plus what you should look for in an electric ride when heading into the wild.

What to Look For When Buying an E-Scooter for Camping
Before buying an e-scooter to take on your adventure, there are quite a few things you need to consider. Not all scooters can handle the lifestyle, so we’ve outlined the key areas on which you need to focus to make sure your ride doesn’t let you down in the wilderness.
Carry/ Rider Weight
Generally, there’s a good chance you’ll have backpacks & equipment when you are camping. If you are leaving these at the campsite, then there’s no issue, but if you’re going to be covering any ground on your e-scooter while wearing additional clothing or equipment, you’ll need to consider the maximum weight your ride can carry. Most e-scooters are rated to carry riders up to 100kg, so always consider your weight plus the weight of anything you will be carrying with you. If that puts you over 100kg, then read our guide on electric scooters for heavier riders here, or check out our related collection here.
Unit Weight
If you need to transport your e-scooter anywhere, consider how much the unit itself weighs. This is particularly important if you’re going to need to carry your ride, or frequently lift it over obstacles or into a car. Some of the rides on this list weigh 30 kg and over, so if your adventure will require you to carry your ride around regularly, stick to the lighter scooters.
Storage
It’s advisable to never leave your e-scooter outside at any time, even riding around town. Camping is no different. With unpredictable weather, the last thing you want is for your scooter to short out in the rain, particularly if it’s one of the heavier rides available on this list.
On top of that, theft is common in campgrounds given the lack of witnesses & security. Because of this, you should make sure that your e-scooter is small enough to store inside your tent, caravan, or car when not in use.
Folding & Portability
Most electric scooters have some sort of folding mechanism that lets you collapse the handlebar stem. This has the benefits of making the ride easier to carry & store. Portability relates to more than just storage, however, and as suggested above, if you’re going to be carrying your scooter for any period of time, you may want to consider something lighter.
Some scooters also have folding handlebars, which is great for saving space as well. Handlebars can either fold flat to the stem, but some also twist as they fold so they sit flush against the frame. This is ideal for being carried on the back of cars & campervans.
Range
Electric rides of any sort are difficult to charge while out & about, so consider your campsite’s proximity to a power source. If you’re going to be a long way from any sort of electricity, get an e-scooter with a long range. You don’t want to get caught short in the wilderness with a 35kg e-scooter.
An eBike is an ideal solution as they can be ridden without the assistance of a battery.
Can You Charge an E-Scooter With a Solar Panel?
Yes, so long as the solar panel puts out 240V or 110V. If not, you might need to hunt down a special charger, and given that e-Scooter chargers are very specific to their respective models, this may be more hassle than it's worth. Plus, if the charger isn’t 100% compatible, you risk blowing your battery.
You’re unlikely to find a portable solar panel you can carry that puts out that voltage, but you can fix these types of solar panels to the roof of a car, caravan, or campervan. If you can do this, you shouldn’t need to worry about range.
Suspension
Camping generally involves a lot of rough terrain, trails, and uneven surfaces. To protect your e-scooter & give yourself a more comfortable ride, go for a scooter with some sort of suspension, even if you just go for front suspension. Dual suspension is ideal, however.
Not many electric rides are built for significant punishment, so if you plan on throwing your scooter down the side of a mountain while you’re camping, maybe consider a different choice of ride.
Tyres
Electric scooter tyres are prone to punctures, and there’s nothing more irritating than being stuck with a fully-charged & working electric scooter just because you’ve got a puncture. There are a few rides below that have either heavy-duty, puncture-resistant, or self-healing tyres. If you’re planning on taking your ride off-road, you should pay particular attention to the tyres fitted to your ride.
Water Resistance
You’ll be hard pressed to find a 100% waterproof electric scooter, so you should wise up on water resistance ratings. As mentioned above, weather is unpredictable, so having an electric scooter that can handle water & splashes is paramount.
Take a look below to understand more about the IP ratings that matter for electric scooters:
- IPX4: Protects from splashing water, no matter the direction
- IPX5: Protected against low pressure water stream from any angle
- IP54: Protected against powerful water jets
- IP56: Water from projected jets shall not enter in any harmful quantity
- IPX6: Protected against high pressure water stream from any angle
- IP67: protected against short periods of immersion in water while under pressure between 15cm and 1m.
Always remember that water damage can take the form of a range of random and erratic problems, from lights not working properly to brake failure, so even if you choose a scooter with a high IP rating, you should still make every effort to keep it away from moisture, and wipe away any splashes with a dry cloth as soon as possible.
Just like any other electronic device, water damage will immediately void any warranty on your ride & leave you out-of-pocket for repairs. It’s best not to chance it.
Planned Activities
Consider what you’re intending to do on your trip. If you’re camping near a town, and the biggest adventure you’ll do on your scooter is riding to the nearest town, you’ll have a bigger choice of rides. However, if you’re planning on tackling the local terrain, you’ll need something a bit more durable.
Area
If you’re going to a popular or busy campsite, you might want to consider other people when choosing your ride. Picking a ride that can go over 100 kph might be a great thrill, but in busy spaces the chances of a serious accident are greatly increased. Conversely, if you’re 3 degrees north of the middle of nowhere with not a person in sight, you might find your lower powered scooters leave you wanting more.
Don’t Forget this Camping Must-Have: A Reliable Power Station
To ensure you don’t run out of power in the middle of nowhere, don’t forget about your power source. A portable power station is an essential addition to your outdoor gear. It powers your camping gadgets and equipment, helps you stay connected, and keeps your rides fully charged so you can go whenever you need to.
That said, we highly recommend the new Segway Power Station Cube—a compact portable power station that has the ability for cordless capacity expansion. With the Power Station Cube, you can stack multiple battery packs and expand its power capacity up to an impressive 5kWh.
Beyond its modular design, the Power Station Cube boasts impeccable engineering. You can confidently go off the grid, as the Power Cube is built tough and can handle extreme temperatures, different weather conditions, shocks, drops, potential electrical hazards like overcharging and short-circuits, and so much more.
The Segway Power Station Cube also has 12 power output sockets and ports: two DC outlets, three AC outlets, one car outlet, two type-C outlets, and four USB-A outlets. Whatever your power requirements are, the Station Cube has you covered.

Top Electric Scooter Recommendations for Camping Trips
With all the above in mind, here is the list of the best electric scooters for camping and caravanning. Not every scooter in this list fits all the criteria listed above, so if you’re unsure whether anything on this list is suitable for your needs, it’s best to give the experts at Electric Kicks a call on 1300 054 257 for help.
You’ll also find a summary table towards the bottom of the article.
Segway-Ninebot MAX G2
The Segway-Ninebot MAX G2 may be more known as the quintessential commuter e-scooter, but it has all the qualities of a good camping companion. Although not as speedy or powerful as more expensive performance scooters, it’s the ideal choice if you are looking for a lighter and more portable all-terrain ride.
The MAX G2’s 450W motor propels it to reach top speeds of up to 35 kph, while its battery gives it enough juice to cover up to 70 km in range. If you're looking for a reliable electric scooter that you can easily transport via your van or RV that comes with good range, this electric scooter is an excellent option.
Expect smooth rides when you glide over pebbly and grassy ground, as the MAX G2 has front hydraulic and rear double spring suspension that eats up bumps and vibrations. It also has 10-inch self-healing pneumatic tubeless tyres that give good traction and grip without you having to worry about flats.
If you want a versatile e-scooter that’s perfect for both weekday commutes and weekend camping trips, the Segway-Ninebot MAX G2 has it all—from ride comfort and good range to all-terrain capabilities.

Apollo Air V3
Like the Segway-Ninebot MAX G2, the Apollo Air line is better known by many as a great commuter electric scooter. Similar to its predecessors (including one of our previous entries, the Air V2), the Apollo Air V3 maintains a sleek and lightweight design that makes it one of the top portable choices in our list.
But beyond being lightweight, the Apollo Air V3 features great top speed, better range, and upgraded functionalities that make it a suitable ride for all-terrain pursuits. Powered by a 500W motor and a 36V battery, it reaches a peak speed of 34 kph and covers distances of up to 55 km. Although these numbers are far from the highest in our inventory, the Air is a capable e-scooter that takes you to nearby trails, lakes, and other outdoor spots. To make your rides smoother and more stable, it also comes with better designed and more responsive throttles.
The Apollo Air V3 is also equipped with a front-dual fork suspension system, which allows it to glide over bumpy and uneven surfaces like dirt trails and grassy fields. And because it has an exceptionally high water-resistance rating (IP66), it can manage rains and wet environments.
In other words, this light and portable electric scooter is designed to handle the variety of surfaces that you’re likely to encounter in a campsite.

Apollo Phantom V3
The Apollo Phantom remains to be one of Apollo’s most powerful electric scooters. Powered by two 1200W motors, the Phantom V3 is capable of achieving an incredible 61-kph top speed. Meanwhile, its battery allows you to travel 64 km on a single charge.
Like the Segway-Ninebot GT2, the Phantom is not a lightweight e-scooter at 35 kg. However, it is also remarkably suited for rough terrain in the wilderness, having been equipped with a strong quadruple spring suspension system and a 25-degree climb angle. When it comes to stopping power, the Phantom sports efficient front and rear mechanical disc brakes that work together with regenerative brakes, supported by the first-ever regenerative braking throttle on a performance e-scooter.
If you intend to zip around and past your campsite at high speeds, the Phantom V3 is the answer, particularly its Mach 1 controller and Ludo Mode that boosts the stock 61 kph top speed to an electrifying 66 kph. With the Phantom, you can race across open plains, swerve through trees, and climb hills without breaking a sweat.

Apollo Ghost
The Apollo Ghost falls perfectly somewhere between the Apollo Air & the Apollo Phantom, and has maintained its moniker as one of our favourite electric scooters of all time. It’s an incredibly versatile unit, and for what you get, very reasonably-priced as well.
It joins the Phantom in the dual-motor category, powered by two 1,000W brushless motors that give it enough torque to pull its 29-kg body up inclines of 25% while supporting a weight of up 135 kg.
It’ll reach a top speed of 60 kph, and its 52V Dynavolt battery is capable of producing a range of 63 km on a single charge.
Similar to the other e-scooters on this list, the Ghost comes with front & rear suspension with adjustment capabilities to change the ride comfort. Depending on where you’re camping, you can choose from three riding modes that limit the speed to 25 kph, which is better for campgrounds, or two modes that’ll let you travel over 40 kph everywhere else. Front & rear disc brakes make an appearance, alongside an electric regenerative brake that pumps energy back into the battery when braking. The Ghost also has full lighting for safety, and a water resistance rating of IP54. It also requires a key to start, meaning it’s less likely to be stolen, but spare keys are hard to come across, so be certain you don’t lose it.
It’s better for camping trips supported by a car or caravan where it can be securely stored & transported around, but the advantage of the Ghost is that it’ll perform just as well in an urban environment, meaning you can use it to get to work and back during regular days as well.
It has proven a fan favourite and sells out quickly, so if you’re planning your next adventure away, get yours quickly.

Inokim OX Super
The OX Super is Inokim’s flagship e-scooter, so it’s no surprise that it comes with superior features and capabilities that allow it to be one of the best rides you can take on your next camping trip. With its 1000W motor, you can cruise through the wilderness at speeds reaching 50 kph. On the other hand, its battery gives it one of the greatest mileages we’ve seen in electric scooters: up to 97 kilometres on a single charge.
The Inokim OX Super conquers rough and bumpy trails just as easily as it glides over smooth pavements. This is thanks to the OX Suspension Adapter Patent (OSAP)—the brand’s adjustable suspension system—that adapts to suit different terrains and riding conditions. The low setting is great for city riding, but if you’re venturing into the woods, switch to the high-setting, which is more ideal for off-road rides.
This Red Dot Design Award winner also stands out because it doesn’t look anything like your regular electric scooter. For one, it employs a bold colour scheme (that you can easily spot in a sea of similar scooters) that tempers its muscular build. If this sounds like something right up your alley, consider getting the Inokim OX Super now.

EMove Roadrunner Pro Seated E-Scooter
Coming from EMove, the maker of some of the best seated electric scooters around, the Roadrunner Pro is the perfect answer if you’re looking for a comfortable e-scooter that doesn’t lack speed, range, power, and off-road capabilities. Compared to its earlier versions, the new Roadrunner Pro has stronger motors, longer range, and better features to take your camping trips to the next level.
With two robust 2000W motors, the Roadrunner Pro is one of the most powerful e-scooters on our list, going from zero to 24 kph in just 2 seconds and then maintaining an 80-kph top speed. Pair this incredible speed with an extended 80-km range (which you can even double thanks to its large-capacity removable battery) and you’re ready to ride and camp anywhere your heart desires.
You can also expect these long-distance rides to be smooth and comfortable thanks largely to its long, padded seat and a suspension system that consists of motorcycle-style forks and hydraulic shocks. This buttery-smooth ride quality can also be attributed to the Roadrunner Pro’s split rims and tubeless tyres, making room for oversized tyres that help iron out wrinkled roads. Another feature that makes the Roadrunner Pro popular with campers is its excellent hill-climbing ability, scaling 30-degree angles with ease and sustained momentum.

Inokim OXO
If you are looking for incredible range but also require a high top speed to go with it, the Inokim OXO is a great electric scooter to consider. Thanks to a high-capacity 57.6V battery, it covers an even greater distance than the Segway-Ninebot P100—a whopping 110 km, which easily makes it the electric scooter with the highest range in our current inventory.
But the Inokim OXO is not just a long-range e-scooter; it’s also fast. Powerfully propelled by two 1000W motors, the OXO packs a punch and achieves a higher-than-average 65 kph top speed to go well with its range. These motors also produce enough power for climbing hills while maintaining speed. Meanwhile, its upgraded controller keeps you in control of your ride even when you go fast on difficult landscapes.
The Inokim OXO is a tough electric scooter all throughout. If you prefer to simply roll over obstacles instead of swerving around them, the OXO can do that using its combination of 10-inch pneumatic tyres and brand-patented adjustable dual suspension system that smooths out rough rides.

Electric Rides to Bring When Camping
If you enjoy camping but electric scooters aren’t your thing, there are a few alternatives that offer you the same experience at a similar price point. Check them out below.
(Please note that Sur-Ron electric dirt bikes are best suited for remote camping and off-road adventures. However, because of their larger size and heavier weight, we recommend them only if you have ample vehicle space for transportation.)
Sur-Ron Light Bee X
The new Sur-Ron Light Bee X is one of the best electric dirt bikes presently available in Australia, taking what’s great about the older version and adding new features and upgrades. With a design similar to Segway’s discontinued X260 dirt bikes, the Sur-Ron sustains a top speed of 75 kph thanks to its upgraded 6000W motor.
While the first version of the Light Bee X had a 34Ah battery and offered a 50-km range, the Light Bee X 2023 is now equipped with a higher-capacity 40Ah battery to deliver a far more superior 75-km mileage. It promises a great deal of fun without you having to worry about running out of juice midway.
Its progressive INTERSECT TR suspension system is capable of handling bumps, lumps, & jumps, off road trails & more, while the acceleration of zero to 50 kph in just 4 seconds is enough to raise a variety of hairs. A forged aluminium alloy frame can support a weight of 100 kg, and four-piston hydraulic brakes on both front & rear wheels plus an added electronic brake ensure that the weight & power of the ride can be controlled.
In fact, the only real downside to the Sur-Ron is getting it somewhere you can ride it, as this version isn’t road-legal in Australia. Being a big & bulky item, the Light Bee X really needs to be transported by a van or trailer, which makes it somewhat inaccessible for a lot of campers.
Then again, the Light Bee X is so powerful that it’s best kept away from populated areas such as busy camping grounds.

Sur-Ron Ultra Bee
If the Sur-Ron Light Bee X above piqued your interest but you need even more power and brawn, you need to take a look at the Sur-Ron Ultra Bee. Just like the Light Bee X, the new Ultra Bee sports a rugged design that makes it fitting for thrilling outdoor adventures just like camping and caravanning.
You’ll experience superior acceleration with the Ultra Bee, as it goes from zero to 50 kph in a mere couple of seconds. Thereafter, it achieves an electrifying top speed of up to 90 kph. The Ultra Bee does not hold back on range either, as its high-capacity 74V battery allows the e-dirt bike to cover up to 140 km on a single charge. In terms of riding comfort, the bike is equipped with a fully adjustable front and rear suspension.
The Ultra Bee may be a beast, but you’re in full control of your ride thanks to the Sur-Ron Traction Control System (SRTC), which keeps the bike stable even when you glide over difficult terrain and road obstacles.
There are only a handful of Ultra Bees available in Australia at any given time, so if you want one, get in fast.

Segway-Ninebot S-Pro (MiniPro)
The S-PRO fits in the fun and convenient categories by being small, easy to use, and reasonably fast for something without handlebards.
It’s the evolution of Segway’s first hoverboard, only this one comes with a post in the middle that makes moving the S-Pro easier than before.
Weighing just 13 kg and with gentle power, it’s a good ride for all ages. Two 800W motors (one in each 26.5-cm wheel) can push the S-Pro to speeds of 18 kph, and a 54.8V battery achieves a range of 22 km.
Its small size and easy-going performance make it ideal for zipping around the campsite without putting anyone in danger, plus it’s easy to store in a tent, car, or caravan when not in use.

Best Electric Bikes for Camping
Aventon Sinch.2
The new Aventon Sinch.2 is one of the most powerful folding electric bikes on the market at the moment, particularly for its sub-$3,000 price-point.
A 500W motor with a peak output of 750W drives the Sinch.2 to a top speed of 32 kph, although that speed is really only limited by how fast you can pedal. To help, the Sinch.2 has 4 levels of pedal assist that gradually replace your pedalling efforts the higher you go, and those that can’t be bothered with pedalling at all will enjoy the independent thumb throttle that removes any need for pedalling altogether.
While the original Sinch reached a 64-km max range, the Sinch.2 is tipped to reach a range of 88 km on a single charge, but it can go much further than that if you use low pedal-assist settings or use the motor sparingly.
A combination of fat tyres & front suspension mean the Sinch.2 is one of the most versatile folding electric bikes around, being able to handle off-road trails, hills, walking tracks & regular roads with ease.
A surprisingly-secure folding mechanism keeps the ride firm & stable, and a long wheelbase makes the Sinch.2 feel more like a regular bike. Considering the whole thing folds down to be about ⅓ of the size, this electric bike is a feat of engineering.
It’s a little on the heavy side coming in at 30 kg, so carrying it around isn’t really an option, but it is easy enough to lift in and out of a car or caravan. The handlebars also twist as they fold down, allowing them to sit flush to the frame. This helps if you plan on carrying the Sinch.2 on the back of a campervan, for example.
What’s more, you also get a colour LCD screen, a removable 48V battery that puts out 672 Wh, a maximum rider weight of 136 kg, and mechanical disc brakes.
Coming in at a price of just $2,899, the Aventon Sinch.2 represents incredible value for money. To put it simply, you won’t find a folding electric bike with this much power, this many features, and this build quality for anything close to the Sinch.2’s price.

Aventon Aventure.2
The clue is in the name—the Aventure line is Aventon’s ebike for adventuring. It also happens to be the most powerful of the range, with the Aventure.2 sporting a 750W rear hub motor capable of driving the ebike to speeds of 45 kph.
This is a hard-wearing bike. Weighing in at 35 kg (2 kg heavier than its predecessor), the Aventure.2 isn’t so much something you bring along for the trip as it is the actual trip itself. While the first version of the Aventure had a max range of 72 km, the Aventure.2 can now cover up to 96 km, which can be extended by sparing use of its 5 pedal assist modes & independent throttle. Hence, not only can you ride it on long country trails, but it can get you to the campsite as well.
Aventon is famous for its attention to detail. There isn’t a single part on any of their bikes that doesn’t have a reason to be there. Whether this is the integrated front & rear lights (including brake light), the addition of auto-cancelling turn signals, metal fenders, colour LCD screen, removable battery, or its app connectivity, the thought that has gone into the Aventure is clear.
Large, fat tyres, front suspension, and a padded seat also come together to produce a very comfortable ride.
And while its price of $3,799 puts it as one of the more expensive in Aventon’s range, compared to its compatriots in the market, this price represents incredible value for money.

For Young Adventurers
Segway-Ninebot C2 Pro and Segway-Ninebot Zing C8
Segway-Ninebot C2 Pro
Priced at $599 and $399 respectively, you can expect gentle & safe performance. With top speeds of between 16 and 20 kph and a range between 10 and 15 km, both electric scooters deliver just enough power that allows your kids to enjoy their explorations while keeping them safe and within reach.
Being small in size means they both weigh around the 10 kg mark, which makes them very easy to transport. Both have efficient braking systems that promise secure stopping.
Segway-Ninebot Zing C8
The Zing C8 is perfect for kids aged 6 to 12 years old. On the other hand, the C2 Pro is better suited for kids 9 years and above. In particular, it’s great for preteens and teenagers in the awkward stage—when they are too old for children’s e-scooters and still too young for regular electric scooters.
If you can’t decide which to get, we highly recommend the C2 Pro. With its adjustable stem, it grows with your child or can be shared among siblings and friends.
