With regards to electric bikes, the term ‘Cruiser’ is a little vague. It can be used to describe very long, low bikes with large sweeping handlebars and retro bikes with very curved frames to things that look a little more like café racer motorbikes. 

Cruiser is less indicative of the style of bike, and better suited to describe how it is used. They are designed to provide a comfortable, relaxed ride wherever you take them. They don’t look out of place cruising along beach fronts and more hip parts of town, but that doesn’t mean that’s all you can do on them.

Comfort

Cruiser bikes are an exercise of comfort over application. While both the Aventon Pace 500.2 and Aventon Pace 350.2 are fast and versatile, they are designed to be comfortable regardless of how you use them. 

Cruiser bikes don’t commonly come with suspension, so ride comfort is provided through a combination of smoother tyres and wide, comfortable saddles. 

Comfort extends beyond a smooth ride, however. The rider position of cruisers tend to be a lot more upright than standard frame designs. Instead of being hunched over, the rider can sit in a more comfortable position which is actually better for longer rides. If you’ve never experienced a more upright riding position before, you’ll be surprised at just how pleasant it is, particularly if you’ve spent all your time riding regular bikes before.

Convenience

Cruiser ebikes are generally used in urban environments where other forms of transport either don’t go or can’t go. For example, your train or tram might get you to an area of town that’s close to the beach, but it doesn’t get you all the way there. A cruiser electric bike gets you all the way there in comfort, and you haven’t had to pay any transport fees. 

Similarly, traffic & parking is a pain, so you may find for some journeys, you’re actually quicker riding a cruiser ebike to your destination compared to driving, then parking, then walking the rest of the way to your destination. 

Versatility

Cruiser e-bikes actually fill a variety of roles. While taking it easy and looking good while doing it is a fundamental aspect of them, you’ll find that Aventons in particular have a range of applications. 

They can be used as commuters, errand bikes, or leisurely riding. Their reasonably light weights make them manageable to pedal without the motor, and hybrid tyres can handle tarmac surfaces and looser terrain such as rail trails. This means they can fit into your life in a number of ways. 

Comfortable Saddle

It’s hard to look good cruising when you’re having to constantly adjust your seating position to give your rear end a break. As Cruiser e bikes aren’t predominantly designed for speed, you should look for a wider, longer, and taller saddle than you would on other types of ebike. This ensures you get a comfortable, padded ride. If possible, look for saddles with built in suspension such as the Aventon Pace 500.2. 

Sweeping Handlebars

The upright riding position mentioned above is a result of handlebars that curve backwards towards the rider. If the upright riding position is important to you, always go for the swept-back style of handlebars. 

Battery Life & Range

It’s hard to relax when your bike can only go 30 kms per charge, so go for a minimum of 60+ kms on a single charge. Remember, the higher pedal assist level you use and the more intense your riding style, the faster your battery depletes, so make sure your ride is capable of producing enough life to accommodate your rides. 

Frame Shape

Cruiser frames tend to look different to how you imagine a standard bike should look. They are generally lower, and can look a little small depending on how tall you are. You’ll usually find a lower top tube and a more acute angle between the top & down tubes as a result. This is all designed to provide a balanced ride if you prefer the seat in a higher riding position.

Motor Power

While the two variants of the Pace come with powerful motors, you’d be considering them based less on speed and more on how you intend on riding them. Cruising e-bikes are all about taking it easy, but that’s hard to do when you have to put in a significant effort yourself. If you want to put in minimum effort at all times and just want to get around, you’d be better going for something such as the Pace 500.
