Can Electric Scooters Get Wet?

We’ve all seen what happens when electricity meets water. Whether we’ve watched a film or two, or experienced it first hand, on one thing we can all agree: electricity and water do not mix. While a wet electric scooter is unlikely to lead to death or injury-inducing accidents, it can put an end to the time you share with your scooter, so this raises two questions:

  • Can electric scooters get wet?
  • And if so, how wet?

There’s some good news, most e-scooters can tolerate some light rain, but it’s good to remember that the water resistance of different units varies. Another thing to also take note of is that manufacturers don’t recommend riding in heavy rain, deep puddles, or snow.

To determine how strong the water resistance they have, you need to know their IP Rating. But, what do the numbers in the rating mean? Let’s have a look.

Are There E-Scooters That Are Waterproof?

There are no electric scooters on the market that are completely waterproof. Regardless of the brand, all types of scooters, from entry-level to premium models, can be damaged when used by riders in dire conditions.

Sadly, not all listen and prefer to test their luck. If there’s a choice not to ride and someone still proceeds to do so, that’s just recklessness. Wet roads are highly hazardous, especially if your e-scooter is designed for beginners. In addition to endangering yourself and your scooter, it also threatens those around you.

But, some cities are just riddled with rain no matter the season. If that’s the case, riders will inevitably be caught in unpleasant weather conditions. As such, you need to be careful in selecting an e-scooter.

What Is An IP Rating?

IP Rating refers to the “ingress protection” numerical codes. The rating usually contains two digits: the first is for debris resistance, and the second is for water resistance. Occasionally, an X will appear in the rating, indicating no data for either position.

Paying attention to the IP Rating and knowing what it’s effective against can keep you and your e-scooter safe. Plus, it can save you some serious cash since environmental damage or mistreatment of your e-scooter will void your warranty.

IP Rating Numbers and What They Mean

As already stated, IP Ratings contain two numbers, but now, we’ll only focus on the second digit and what each of them means for your e-scooter.

How To Protect Your Electric Scooter

Occasionally, the inevitable happens. You’re out and about, then all of a sudden, it starts raining. So, here are some tips to help you minimise or avoid getting your e-scooter damaged.

Avoid Using Your E-Scooter While Raining

The most important reminder is to avoid riding your scooter when it's raining, if possible. Yes, this is obvious and repetitive. But, this is to highlight how important this tip is to protect your e-scooter and steer clear of repair costs. Plus, this serves as a reminder to save yourself from possible injuries as riding on wet roads is extremely dangerous.

You may have to leave your scooter somewhere safe and come back to it later. If you’re a commuter, for example, leaving your scooter at work and finding another way home is a cheaper exercise than replacing a water-damaged ride, so while it’s inconvenient, this is a better option than persisting to ride home.

Cover Your E-Scooter

If you park your electric scooter outside or you’re caught in the rain and under a shelter, use a rain cover to protect your ride from getting wet. Ideally, a good scooter cover would be made of polyester material. You should also select something lightweight and portable so you can easily store it in your bag.

Cover the Gaps and Holes of Your E-Scooter

Another way to protect your scooter from getting wet is to cover the electrical wires, gaps, and holes with duct tape. This cheap and easy trick will come in handy when you’re caught riding in the rain or cleaning your scooter. Be careful not to wrap your cables too tightly as they do need some degree of flexibility.

Don’t Fold Your E-Scooter When Wet

When you have no choice but to ride through the rain, the least you can do is learn how to handle your e-scooter afterwards. Don’t fold your two-wheeler while it’s wet because water will just drip down or spread to the stem, LCD screen, throttles, and other electrical components. In case any part of your scooter is wet, make sure it’s dried out before your fold and store it.

Now that you know what an IP Rating is, what each number represents, and how to protect your e-scooter, it’s time to look at specific models to match your needs or skills.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can You Ride An Electric Scooter In The Rain?

Since e-scooters are not waterproof, riding them during heavy rain is a big NO. IPX4-rated models, on the other hand, can be used in light rain for a short period without getting damaged. Scooters that have IPX5 or higher ratings are capable of withstanding more rain for a longer time.

Just remember to be extra careful if you have no choice but to ride your scooter in the rain as the roads are slippery.

Can You Use Water To Clean An Electric Scooter?

Again, this is highly dependent on the IP Rating of your e-scooter. Some scooters can handle light splashes, while others can tolerate high-pressure water or even submersion.

It’s critical to be careful when cleaning electric scooters, especially if the wires are very exposed. And if you can, raise your ride so the tyres can be cleaned of dirt build-up.

Once you’re all done, wipe your scooter with a towel and leave it to dry before folding and storing it. The best practice is to wipe your scooter down with a damp cloth.

Is Water Damage Covered In Warranties?

Water-damaged electric scooters are not covered by warranties, regardless of their IP rating.

Why? Because your distributor will have no idea whether you stayed within limits or exceeded the capabilities of your scooter. Even other companies in different industries don’t cover water-related impairments.

Summary

Electric scooters are NOT waterproof, and it’s not recommended to be used under dire weather conditions. However, some e-scooter models come with an IP Rating, and the second number in the rating classifies how water-resistant they are. The IP Rating varies and some scooters are rated higher than others.
