As regulations pertaining to electric scooters constantly change, it is the buyer’s obligation to stay updated about new legislations in their state.

Adelaide has maintained a conservative stance when it comes to laws surrounding the personal use of e-scooters. Right now, however, trials are in place and locals and tourists can ride scooters through two authorised providers, Beam and Neuron.

As mentioned before, the city has active e scooter trials in place which cover the CBD and North Adelaide. To get a visual representation of these trial areas, you can refer to the provided maps here.

These trials serve as an opportunity for the councils to assess and consider the viability of these rides in the city. The success of these trials will hopefully pave the way for more progressive regulations on electric scooters in Adelaide such as the new rules introduced in Melbourne in April 2023.

The city of Adelaide enjoys a Mediterranean climate, gifting its residents with delightfully warm summers and mild winters. The pleasant weather provides an ideal setting for outdoor activities and leisurely rides throughout the city.

Rainfall is expected during the winter, especially around the month of June. To prepare for these conditions, we advise selecting an e-scooter with a high water resistance rating that can safely handle light rain. 

It is important to note, though, that having good water resistance does not mean the device is entirely waterproof. Therefore, avoid riding your scooter through heavy rains or puddles to prevent potential damage.

Adelaide offers riders the best of both worlds in terms of terrain. The city centre and coastal areas are mostly flat, providing a smooth riding experience. But as you venture towards the eastern and southern regions, the landscape becomes hilly, adding a touch of excitement and challenge to your rides.

The city also showcases a mix of metropolitan areas, lush vegetation, and water forms like creeks and rivers. The flat urban areas are quite easy to navigate and are perfect for commuter electric scooters. Whether you’re commuting to work or simply riding through the metro, you are sure to experience a comfortable and accessible riding environment.

If you want more challenging terrain, try to explore the Adelaide Hills region. Here you can find South Australia’s well-known vineyards, offering an invigorating ride through scenic landscapes. 

Additionally, south-east of the city centre lies Cleland National Park, which provides adventurous riders with an opportunity to experience diverse natural surroundings and encounter local wildlife.

Use your privately owned e scooter in Adelaide to navigate these places (remember to seek the owners’ permission before going):

• Privately owned gardens and recreational areas in subdivisions
• Your own backyard, of course!

The options may be limited for now, but once e-rides are allowed in public roads, remember to consider these areas in Adelaide (in the meantime, take advantage of an authorised shared electric scooter):

Whether you are using a shared vehicle or your own kicks, you need to be at least 18 years old to ride an electric scooter. You also need to be responsible in complying with the following road rules:

• Helmet Use: Always wear a helmet that complies with the current safety standards.
• Footpath Riding: In Adelaide, electric scooters can be ridden on footpaths (unless prohibited by the local councils). They are not allowed on the road unless crossing or avoiding an obstruction for up to 50m.
• Speed Limits: Adhere to the specified speed limit of 15 kph. Stay within a safe speed range that allows you to maintain control and react to any unexpected situations.
• Traffic Regulations: Observe and comply with all traffic signs, signals, and regulations applicable to cyclists and other vehicles.
• Warning Devices: Use warning devices like a horn or a bell, and at night, remember to use a white front light and a red rear light.
• Alcohol and Drugs: Scooting under the influence of alcohol or drugs is strictly prohibited. Ensure you are in a clear and sober state when operating an e scooter.
• Mobile Phone Usage: You should not use your mobile phones while riding. Avoid distractions, and keep your focus on the road to avoid potential accidents.
