The capital city of South Australia is home to more than 1.3 million people and is known for its vibrant social scene. It’s not surprising that many residents are beginning to prefer e-scooters to conveniently navigate the busy cityscape.

So before checking out our products, there are some things that you need to know about electric scooters in Adelaide.

Are Electric Scooters Legal In Adelaide?

UPDATE: As of July 2025, electric scooters are now legal to use in the state of South Australia.

An electric scooter is considered legal if it weighs 45 KG or less, is designed for one person, meets electrical safety standards, is no more than 125 cm long, 70 cm wide, and 135 cm high, and must have a bell, horn, or a similar warning device.

Riders must be at least 16 years old, wear a helmet, and ride responsibly.

The Climate In Adelaide

The city of Adelaide enjoys a Mediterranean climate, gifting its residents with delightfully warm summers and mild winters. The pleasant weather provides an ideal setting for outdoor activities and leisurely rides throughout the city.

Rainfall is expected during the winter, especially around the month of June. To prepare for these conditions, we advise selecting an e-scooter with a high water resistance rating that can safely handle light rain.

It is important to note, though, that having good water resistance does not mean the device is entirely waterproof. Therefore, avoid riding your scooter through heavy rains or puddles to prevent potential damage.

Riding Through The City

Adelaide offers riders the best of both worlds in terms of terrain. The city centre and coastal areas are mostly flat, providing a smooth riding experience. But as you venture towards the eastern and southern regions, the landscape becomes hilly, adding a touch of excitement and challenge to your rides.

The city also showcases a mix of metropolitan areas, lush vegetation, and water forms like creeks and rivers. The flat urban areas are quite easy to navigate and are perfect for commuter electric scooters. Whether you’re commuting to work or simply riding through the metro, you are sure to experience a comfortable and accessible riding environment.

If you want more challenging terrain, try to explore the Adelaide Hills region. Here you can find South Australia’s well-known vineyards, offering an invigorating ride through scenic landscapes.

Additionally, south-east of the city centre lies Cleland National Park, which provides adventurous riders with an opportunity to experience diverse natural surroundings and encounter local wildlife.

Use your privately owned e scooter in Adelaide to navigate these places (remember to seek the owners’ permission before going):

  • Privately owned vineyards and orchards
  • Privately owned gardens and recreational areas in subdivisions
  • Your own backyard, of course!

Consider riding in these areas:

  • River Torrens Linear Park Trail, Adelaide Metro area
  • Riesling Trail, Clare Valley
  • Encounter Bikeway, Fleurieu Peninsula
  • McLaren Vale Wine Region
  • The Old Freeway, Mount Lofty, Adelaide Hills
  • Eagle Mountain Bike Park
  • Beach Foreshore

Please remember to check the current regulations in place for these areas before setting out to explore them. Respecting and complying with the regulations will help ensure a safe and enjoyable riding experience.

E-scooter Safety Requirements

Whether you are using a shared vehicle or your own kicks, you need to be at least 16 years old to ride an electric scooter. You also need to be responsible in complying with the following road rules:

  • Helmet Use: Always wear a helmet that complies with the current safety standards.
  • Footpath Riding: In Adelaide, electric scooters can be ridden on footpaths, shared paths, beaches and road crossings at a maximum speed of 10 KPH.
  • Speed Limits: Meanwhile, the maximum speed allowed for separated footpaths, bicycle paths, bicycle lanes (where the maximum speed limit is 50 KPH), and to the left of any road without a bike lane (50 KPH limit) is 25 KPH.
  • Traffic Regulations: Observe and comply with all traffic signs, signals, and regulations applicable to cyclists and other vehicles.
  • Warning Devices: Use warning devices like a horn or a bell, and at night, remember to use a white front light and a red rear light.
  • Alcohol and Drugs: Scooting under the influence of alcohol or drugs is strictly prohibited. Ensure you are in a clear and sober state when operating an e scooter.
  • Mobile Phone Usage: You should not use your mobile phones while riding. Avoid distractions, and keep your focus on the road to avoid potential accidents.

Adhering to these rules is necessary in creating a harmonious riding experience. Check out the state’s official list of regulations here.
