step-over bikes are named as such because the rider needs to swing their leg, or ‘step over’ the frame to mount them. This is because the top tube tends to be higher and more horizontal than those found on step through electric bikes.
Historically, step-over frames have been more rigid and stable due to their geometry. Currently, advances in manufacturing have negated the difference here, but you can still come across lower-end electric bikes where the frame style makes a difference to overall ride strength.
If you’re buying an electric bike for speed or offroad riding, step through frames usually provide better balance, particularly if you’ll be regularly standing up.
Due to their more ‘standard’ appearance, step-over frames are normally easier to kit out with accessories such as drinks holders, bike pumps, or in-frame storage accessories.
This is a little less accurate when considering bikes such as the Aventon Pace 500.2 step-over, but generally speaking a step-over frame places the rider in a more traditional horizontal riding position than step-through frames.
Step-over frames generally come in larger sizes, so they have historically been more important with taller riders and males. They are also more popular with riders who have a wider range of applications for their bike, or need to take it across a variety of different terrain types that requires a well-balanced ride.
Riders who want to transport their bike on a bike rack tend to gravitate towards step-over frames because most bike-racks are designed to clamp around the top tube, something which can’t be achieved for step-through frames without a top tube.
Beyond this, if your ride has lots of uphills, or you want to go faster, step through frames tend to be better balanced.
