Victoria’s largest provincial city is conveniently located an hour from the state’s capital, Melbourne. But unlike its neighbour, Geelong enjoys an urban feeling without being burdened by urban issues like congestion and overpopulation. 

Home to a population of nearly 270,000, Geelong is Australia’s second-fastest growing city. Because of its location, which opens access to various Victorian regional centres in the Bellarine Peninsula, the city is nicknamed the “Gateway City.”

Geelong is a beautiful city along the coast, with a social scene that brims with lively nightlife and diverse cuisines. Enjoy the view along the Great Ocean Road and, when you’re done, walk around its highly accessible urban centre, complete with facilities for sports, shopping, and leisure. 

A multicultural community, Geelong combines sophisticated structures with cultural and historic attractions like the Geelong Art Gallery and the Narana Aboriginal and Cultural Centre. Festivals, from music, cars, and food, also abound in this dynamic city. Geelong is home to well-known athletic teams, too, so take time to visit if you’re a sports fan (except, maybe, if you’re from Melbourne).

For those who can’t resist the call of the outdoors, there is also so much to explore, from the Eastern Beach and the Bellarine Rail Trail to the mountain range of the You Yangs. 

As the state’s second largest city after Melbourne, Geelong offers a significant contribution to the Victorian economy, making it one of the country’s leading non-capital cities.

Even though Geelong is not a capital city, its residents and visitors enjoy convenient navigation through its modern transportation infrastructure.

With extensive public transit options and road networks, Geelongites can choose to get around the city by bus or train.

That said, just like other Australian cities, Geelong’s public transport system is plagued by its own set of challenges. These include, but are not limited to, scheduling limitations, areas that are not reached by buses or trains, as well as the rising costs of fares.

For these reasons, even with an efficient mass transit system in place, it’s not surprising to see people in Geelong embracing alternative modes of transportation, like electric bikes.

The city falls under Victoria’s jurisdiction and thus employs the same e-bike laws as Melbourne. You are not required to get a licence and registration for your e-bike; however, to be considered legal, it must achieve a maximum ungoverned continuous power output of 200W. In the case of an EPAC (electrically power-assisted cycle), your e-bike should have a maximum continued rated power of 250W, which cuts off at 25 KPH. 

The Climate in Geelong

The city of Geelong enjoys a temperate oceanic climate with comfortably stable and pleasant weather conditions. For most of the year, experience an abundance of sunshine softened by cool breezes from the sea, which allow for multiple outdoor activities like strolling and riding amidst the city’s picturesque beaches and coastline. 

However, temperatures drop during the winter, especially during the months of July and August.

Despite being a progressive and populous city, Geelong does not feel overcrowded. There is plenty of space for exploration without feeling cramped. Good city planning, which combines spacious roads with green spaces and parks, offers a respite from the usual hustle and bustle of the metropolis.

You can’t ride an e bike in Geelong without knowing and complying with their rules and regulations. Here are the guidelines you must remember:

• You should wear a proper electric bike helmet at all times. 
• You should obey traffic rules and be visible at all times.
• You cannot use a mobile phone while riding.
• You should not ride under the influence of drugs and alcohol.
• You can only carry a passenger if your e-bike is designed to carry one (both cyclist and passenger must be wearing helmets).
• Your e-bike must have a white front light, a red rear light, and a red rear reflector.
