Are Electric Scooters Legal in Gold Coast?

Definitely! As it is located in Queensland, the state with some of the most liberal e-scooter laws in the country, Gold Coast also holds a favourable stance compared to many other Australian cities.

But unlike other cities like Adelaide, Gold Coast does not currently have city-approved shared electric scooter schemes. If you wish to experience the city on an e-scooter, you will need to provide your own.

That said, you can enjoy the freedom of riding your e-scooter on approved public roads and spaces, but make sure to adhere to established rules and regulations.

For starters, while you can legally own a fast electric scooter in the city, please note that these speed limits are in place to ensure safety: 25 kph on roads and 12 kph on footpaths. Additionally, wearing a helmet is mandatory at all times. Passengers are not allowed, and riders must always give way to pedestrians.

Also, when riding an e scooter in Gold Coast, you are permitted to ride only on paths and roads where the speed limit does not exceed 50 kph. Thus, you cannot legally ride an electric scooter on highways and main roads.

To learn more about the legalities of riding electric scooters in Gold Coast, please check out Queensland’s rules for personal mobility vehicles and the state’s updated PMD rules. Remember to review these websites from time to time to stay updated about the latest e-scooter guidelines in the city.

The Climate in Gold Coast

With a subtropical climate, the Gold Coast experiences 300 days of sunshine each year.

The city enjoys delightfully warm winters and vibrant, humid summers. In autumn, you can expect sunny days accompanied by cooler nights. Finally, spring brings generally dry and windy conditions.

This climate provides a pleasant and inviting atmosphere for everyone to savour throughout the year. The appeal of the city, particularly its stunning beaches, vibrant nightlife, world-class surfing, and exciting theme parks, owes a lot to its mild weather.

Gold Coast’s enjoyable weather also creates the ideal setting for endless outdoor activities and leisurely scootering, allowing everyone to explore the city’s sights and attractions under the warm sun.

Riding Through the Party City

While the Gold Coast is a well-known tourist destination, navigating the region using public transportation can be challenging. The city’s difficult mass transit scheme can pose potential difficulties for travellers and residents alike.

To freely navigate the city with convenience, we highly recommend using a good commuter e-scooter or an off-road ride to explore the area, cover a good distance, and tackle all sorts of terrain.

Though predominantly flat, you can experience all sorts of terrain when exploring the Gold Coast. Expect to encounter these terrains as you travel within and around the city:

  • Coastline: Known for its stunning coastline, the Gold Coast features long stretches of sandy beaches with a beautiful view of sparkling ocean waters. This part of the city is relatively flat and ideal for enjoyable scooter rides.
  • Urbanscape: The centre of the Gold Coast is a busy city with relatively flat terrain, characterised by paved streets and advanced infrastructure.
  • Hinterland: A short ride from the city centre, the Gold Coast Hinterland is home to scenic rolling hills and a rich variety of flora and fauna. Here, you can take a hike through the Gondwana Rainforests, vineyards like the Cedar Creek Estate, and Gold Coast’s dormant volcano, Mount Tamborine.
  • Parks and Green Spaces: There is no shortage of green spaces within the Gold Coast. In fact, the city has over 2200 parks, nearly 700 playgrounds, and more than 200 sports fields to cater to all kinds of outdoor activities.

Gold Coast is a dynamic city with diverse landforms and bodies of water, varying heights and elevations, abundant plant and animal species, and activities that appeal to both urbanites and nature explorers.

With your own electric scooter in tow, the possibilities for adventure in this city are endless.

Where to Ride in Gold Coast

The Gold Coast’s lenient stance on electric scooters allows you to ride virtually anywhere in the city.

There is just so much to explore – from its 60 kilometres of beach to the city’s sprawling 100,000-hectare nature reserve. The city also has over 500 restaurants and five major theme parks. Where to begin?

We recommend starting your exploration with these areas:

  1. Gold Coast Parklands
  2. Kurrawa Park
  3. Broadwater Parklands
  4. Surfers Paradise
  5. Surfers Paradise bicycle path
  6. Mermaid Beach
  7. Broadbeach
  8. Nobby Beach
  9. Gold Coast Hinterland
  10. Tallebudgera Creek
  11. Nerang National Park

Apart from these well-known destinations, you can enjoy scootering on city streets, mountain bike trails, off-road tracks, strips along beaches, paths in nature reserves and vineyards, and all publicly accessible roads that adhere to the city’s guidelines.

Also, when riding on beaches and coastal areas, be cautious of salt and sand. These particles can get into your gears, motors, and batteries, which can compromise your ride’s integrity. If you plan to explore these sections of the city, we recommend using an e-scooter with a high IP rating.

E-Scooter Safety Requirements

Riding an electric scooter in Gold Coast is legal, but you need to make sure to comply with the city’s e-scooter safety guidelines. Here are Queensland’s general guidelines for riding personal mobility devices:

  • Must wear an Australian Standard (AS) approved helmet
  • Must comply with established speed limits: 12 kph on footpaths and shared paths and 25 kph on bicycle paths and separated paths
  • Must not ride past areas with a “personal mobility devices prohibited” sign
  • Must not have a phone while riding (though mounting the phone to the scooter’s handlebars is allowed)

Additionally, riders should be at least 16 years old (or at least 12 years old with adult supervision). Children under 12 are not allowed to use personal mobility devices in the Gold Coast.

Your electric scooter must also have an effective braking system and a warning device like a bell or a horn. It shouldn’t have any sharp protrusions.

Finally, when riding at night or in low-light conditions, you must ensure visibility by displaying lights that can be seen at least 200 metres from both the back and the front of your scooter and a reflector that can be seen from a distance of at least 50 metres.

To legally enjoy your ride throughout the Gold Coast, make sure to adhere to these guidelines and stay updated with the city council’s announcements.
